Kloster

Novacella

The complex includes the abbey library, well-equipped with ancient manuscripts and research equipment, the Gothic cloister, the Miracle Fountain, and the unusually bright, light-filled late Baroque basilica. Anyone who examines the ceiling paintings up close will discover a remarkable optical effect, incorporated by the architects of the time and reflected in modern television sets.

The monastery now houses a private school, an educational center, and a wine cellar that sells its own wine. In front of the monastery lies the rotunda of St. Michael's Chapel, also called the Castel Sant'Angelo because of its similarity to the Roman building and which was part of the monastery's fortifications.

Today, the Novacella Augustinian Canonry is the largest and most famous monastery complex in Tyrol. Thirty canons still live and work there, providing pastoral care to the surrounding communities, among other things.

The Novacella Abbey is a 5-minute walk from our location and is a worthwhile destination.
